Maestas, David Manuel Jr.
How do you write a memorial for someone who was everything? How do you say goodbye to your light? How can any of us live without that part of our lives that David held?
It is with broken hearts but a treasure trove of memories that we announce the unexpected passing of David Manual Maestas Jr. he was 42.
Mr. Maestas - as he proudly had tattooed across his chest - was the most and the best something to all of us. He was the best son, the best brother, the best friend, the best hairdresser, the best jokester, the most fashionable, the most loyal, the most outspoken, the most flamboyant. You did not need to know David well to love him. But those of us who did know him loved him deeply.
And while David would have you think he was Gwen Stefani’s biggest fan, he was also ours. Because if David loved you, or even if he just liked you, he was always rooting for you. Whatever made us feel the most beautiful, the happiest, that’s what he wanted for all of us.
A friend recently shared a lesson he learned about style from David, who told him, “As long as you rock what makes you feel good and confidently, that’s style.”
And that was David. He could wear a dozen things that made no sense together - Gucci, mesh, raccoon tails, leather, houndstooth, spikes - but he made it work and he looked beautiful doing it. The Fanciest Cholo in town.
David loved his family, his friends, he loved to travel, loved going to United games, loved decorating his body with tattoos that were 100% unique to his spirit, he loved doing hair, he loved his clients, he loved Halloween - and his insanely complicated costumes, he loved Pride, he loved to dance, to laugh, to put us in our place when we needed it, but also hold our hands and let us cry when we needed that too.
We wish he could hold our hands right now and let us cry on his shoulder as we mourn what we’ve lost. But eventually, David would let us know that our mascara was running, he would tell us a joke, recommend a new song, and remind us that we owed it to him and his spirit to keep on living, keep on laughing and of course, keep on rocking what makes us feel comfortable, happy, and beautiful.
Nothing in this world will ever replace the hole in our hearts that David left behind, but the love he had for us and the memories he shared with us, those are ours to keep.
On Tuesday, July 26th, David’s spirit left his body and was reunited with his father, David Maestas Sr., where we imagine they quickly picked the pranks and jokes back up where they had left them two years before. And wherever that is, we hope David can finally enjoy all the gluten, never worry about his blood sugar, and of course, finally meet Amy Winehouse.
David is survived by his mother, Joann Maestas; his siblings, Josett, Jeremy, Michelle, their spouses, five nieces, three nephews, seven great nieces and nephews and one on the way. and countless beloved friends.
David’s final resting place will be at Fairview Memorial Park. In the Rosary Garden, next to his father David Maestas Sr. on Monday, August 15, 2022 at 11 a.m. To view information or leave a condolence please visit www.garciamortuary.com
