Edwin A. Barela, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on November 29, 2024, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Born on January 25, 1947, in Socorro, New Mexico, Edwin's life was a testament to dedication, love, and service.
Edwin was a devoted family man, cherished by his loving wife of 57 years, Irene Barela. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter, raising their children: Denise Barela-Paez and her husband Joe Paez, Edwin Barela, and Andres Barela. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Trinidad, Gilbert, Thomas, Matthew, Mikayla, Adriana, Rosie, Andres, Viviana, and Alleyana, as well as five great-grandchildren who brought him immense pride and joy. Edwin is also survived by his brother, Teles Barela, and his sisters, Miquela Baca, Rosie Lueras, and Elsie Otero.
At the young age of 17, Edwin joined the United States Marine Corps, a decision that showcased his courage and commitment. His service was a defining chapter in his life, instilling values of discipline and honor that he carried throughout his years.
Edwin married Irene Ramona Blea on June 10, 1967, in Albuquerque. Their love story was one of deep connection and shared joy. Edwin had a passion for wrestling, baseball, and football, but it was his garden that truly captured his heart. Tending to his plants brought him peace and reflected his nurturing spirit and love for life.
Edwin's life was a vibrant tapestry of love, service, and dedication. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
A viewing will be held on December 5, 2024, at the Catholic Church of the Ascension located at 2150 Raymac Rd SW, Albuquerque, NM 87105, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A rosary will follow at 7:00 pm. Mass of a Christian Burial will be held at the Catholic Church of the Ascension on December 6, 2024, at 10:00 am, followed by burial at Pajarito Cemetery located at 5811 Coors Blvd SW, Albuquerque, NM 87121.
